Title

Barton Grange: A Topping Tale

Info

On a cold winter’s afternoon in January 1951, a battered old lorry pulled up at the door of Barton Grange, a country manor house near Preston. Edward and Ada Topping and their son Eddie had left behind their cosy little bed and breakfast and market gardening businesses and moved to start afresh. Fifty years later, Eddie’s three sons were running one of Preston’s best known companies: The Barton Grange Group – an hotel, landscaping, nursery and award-winning garden centre business. The years in between were always fascinating, sometimes turbulent and often entertaining. This is the story of the house that gave its name to the enterprise, of Edward, Ada and Eddie, and of their adventure as it unfolded.

Author Ian Topping says of his experience with Scotforth Books:“Having never been even remotely involved in publishing a book before, when it came to producing our family/company history the assistance I received from Scotforth Books was invaluable. And they were a pleasure to work with too. I received tremendous guidance from Anna Goddard in the earliest stages but once the writing was finished and the illustrations planned out it was time to really put Scotforth to the test as we worked through all the detail as to how the finished article would actually look. Producing a book like ours is a very personal thing and I worked closely with Lucy Frontani to get just what we wanted. Lucy was not only unendingly patient but also brought all her talents to bear and was never afraid to make suggestions as she magically turned my (very) rough draft into something that looked like a real book!”
