First things first

What is self-publishing?
Put simply, self-publishing is where a book is produced on behalf of an author or organisation who will pay all the costs of production, own all the copies, and have complete control over the content, design, print run and distribution of the book.
Self publishing is a well recognised and very popular means of publishing books which commercial publishers will not accept for their lists. You should expect good, honest advice, which may include using a route that does not involve Scotforth Books.
There are various way to self-publish, however if you want to include photos etc. in your book, wish to have a high quality, professionally designed product, and need advice on each aspect of production, you will need the services of a good book publisher.
Publishing with Scotforth Books will mean that the design of your book will look as good – and often better – than those you will find on bookshop shelves.
Your publishing aims
Before an author decides whether or not to go ahead and invest in the publication of their book, we believe it is important that he or she is clear about what they are hoping to achieve by publishing their book.
Author and organisations that approach us sometimes have different aims for their book. You can find out more about how Scotforth Books can help you meet your publishing aims by clicking on the appropriate link below.
The first steps
Once you have written your book, the first step is to have a good read of the material on this website, which has been designed to be comprehensive but very accessible. You can contact us to receive the contents of this website in an easy-to-read booklet for printing – see the Resources section.
Next up, some things to consider
The big question, and the one we get asked most frequently, is “how much will it cost to self-publish my book?”.
In order to calculate this we require certain details – see the checklist. In many cases, authors don’t have a clear idea of what they want, or what best meets their requirements, which is not a problem. All we will need is a very rough idea so that we can give you information about the various options – in plain English, we promise!
Of course, if you already have a clear idea of what you want you can give us these details and we can provide you with a price.
Contact us
Once you have made a rough decision on the details of your book it is probably sensible to contact us so that we can advise you on the best way forward – we are always honest and will discuss which option will best meet your requirements.
Our initial advice and evaluation, as well as any estimate we supply, are all completely free of charge, of course. Once you have a price and would like to take things further we can arrange a meeting, usually at our offices where you can see how we work and meet the people who will be making your book a reality.
